We just can’t resist coloured breeds that are a little bit different, so in late 2009 bought a couple of Gotland ewes as companions for our horse. They are a rare breed originating from the Swedish Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. They are a tall fine boned breed with black face and legs, and a long grey soft curly fleece that is most sought after by crafts people for spinning and felting. There are only around 1000 registered ewes in the country, most of which seem to be in the Southwest, and there is an active Gotland Sheep Society. Inevitably we couldn’t resist collecting a few more so now have a small flock of 10 ewes bred for their superb fleeces and skins.
